Aftermath Untitled-122

We kept sending out messages.

We thought whoever was out there was peaceful.

We were wrong.

For decades, mankind broadcast information to the stars, hoping to one day meet with an extraterrestrial race. From technology schematics, to the location of the solar system, to basic human biology, every bit of data was freely sent towards the unknown, an open invitation for all to accept. An offering of peace. With the human space exploration program booming, it was hoped that by the time any space-faring civilizations got to Earth, humanity would have the technology to defend itself; it took centuries to cross the stars, after all.

Nothing could be further than the truth.

Armstrong Lunar Base was established on the 26th of March, 2031. Gagarin Outpost became operational on Mars just a year after that. The scuttling of the International Space Station was delayed, instead converting it into a refueling outpost for Mars-bound vessels. It took months to get to Mars, but it was well worth the effort.

But down on Earth, things were taking a turn for the worse. With the war in the middle east finally coming to an end, the West focused its crosshairs elsewhere. The Korean Peninsula became man's next battlefield, starting with aerial bombardments on Pyongyang. Everyone thought that the North Korean government would not be insane enough to consider the nuclear option. But they did.

Seoul was annihilated in the early hours of the 18th of October, 2036. A five megaton nuclear weapon was used, razing the city to the ground. Millions were killed. Many more fell victims to the radiation.

The United Nations unanimously voted for a full intervention in the war, sending hordes of troops, ships and aircraft to attack North Korea. With the later being unable to field any more weapons, since its stockpiles were seized immediately after the attack on Seoul, the war became a devastating defeat for North Korea. On the 3rd of April, 2037, North Korea surrendered unconditionally.

But on the 1st of January 2038, just as NATO prepared to invade the Middle East once more, humanity's petty fights were put to an end. A massive multi-kilometer sized object suddenly appeared in Low Earth Orbit, and it begun to annihilate major human population centers with extreme prejudice. New York was hit with a twenty megaton kinetic blast; London and Moscow followed within the next hour.

At 15:32, the United Nations transmitted a message offering unconditional surrender.

One hour later, they received a single response, translated into English: 'No.'

Half an hour after that, troop transports were sent down from the alien ship. They landed near the devastated cities that had been hit, and their exoskeleton-clad passengers begun to capture the victims that had survived the initial blasts.

But humanity won the war.

At midnight, missile silos around the globe coordinated in the single largest nuclear attack in human history. Missile operators from America, Europe, Russia, India, Pakistan and a dozen other nations slid their keys into the slots and unleashed the wrath of nuclear hell upon the alien warship, firing more ordnance than had ever been released in the history of war.

It was early morning when the irradiated pieces of the object, known only as 'the Mothership', begun to rain down all over the world. For the aliens had made one fatal flaw: they had not detected the human nuclear weapons.

But the damage was done. With two billion people dead, and the rest injured, starving and irradiated, the human race was doomed to fall into chaos. The nations fought over the last pieces of irradiated land in the north, away from the crash sites of the alien ship's pieces and the radioactive clouds.

Human civilization as we knew it ceased to exist in the 2nd of January, 2038.

We won the war, but at great cost.

The year is 2068, thirty years after the Invasion. Humanity has fallen into a dark age; survivors have fled north, away from the radioactive zones, but there is little room to go by. Many have been forced to live in the radiation, seeking shelter underground. The governments of old have collapsed, evolved. Nations have risen from the ashes of war, built upon the stockpiles of military hardware found in caches and warehouses. Some are mere bandit gangs, others are oppressive tyrannies, and every once in a while, a democracy reveals itself. These nations rule small areas of land, either contaminated or pure.

They live on four resources.

Fuel, Water, Food and Land.

Fuel is a complicated matter; although the world's oil supply is dwindling, some still see it fit to use it for its low entry barrier. Others rely on uranium, plutonium and other forms of nuclear fission. Some have adopted hydrogen fusion technology, an experimental project from before the Invasion.

Some are powered by alien relics.

Water is the most basic of human needs. The Earth's seas have been greatly contaminated by the radioactive fallout, and underground rivers and the occasional lake provide for the most pure forms of water. Most people have to get by using crude purifiers.

Food is one of the biggest of problems in the aftermath of the war. With the land contaminated by radiation, and a nuclear winter underway, the people of Earth have few sources of food. It is too cold up north to grow anything, and too irradiated in the south to eat it. The people rely on rare zones in-between, or on indoor greenhouses.

Land has become a serious issue. There is not enough room up north, and too much radiation south. The nations fight over the last remaining pieces of viable land, or are forced to live underground.

There is also the issue of safety, not only from the other human nations and the bandits, but from the remnants of the alien army. Not much is known about them, but they continue to harass the smaller settlements, along with sabotaging military and civilian assets.

This is where you come in. Either through fear, trust or manipulation, you have managed to become the leader of one of the nations of Earth. Whether you were elected, inherited the power or took over in a violent coup, your people are yours to command.

This will play a bit like Amongst the Stars, but on a different setting and with a more desperate theme. Players will have to juggle between issues determined by random rolls, such as a sudden famine, or the discovery of an alien artifact, alongside their interaction between each other and with actions they take.

Every player starts with 32 points, and can spend them however they choose. Every attribute has either 0, 1, 2 or 3.

If you're going to give people both the option to have 10mil people and to live in a bunker, you need to set up linked min/maxes. Also, Military Size, Infantry, Mechanized forces, Navy and Airforce should all have "What army?" as their 0. It doesn't make sense for a landlocked bunker to have any boats, for example.

also, this bothered me so I figured I'd mention it (in bold);

The governments of old have collapsed or evolved. It doesn't make sense to do both. They either crumbled and dissipated, to be replaced by an upstart or a usurper, or it changed to suit it's new circumstances.

Also I'm calling an Alaska sized chunk of Northern Quebec if I join this game. Vive le Quebec Libre!

All great observations, will get to changing some things in a bit!
