Creation, the Triumvirate, the Great Divide.

In the beginning, before the time of the living or mortals, the great unisphere was not populated by vast stars, or the realms of the immortals, but it was mere blackness. All that existed of the realm was powerful, powerful arcane storms! So powerful that if one of its magnitude were to appear over mortal lands, the very earth beneath their feet would crumble. And for eons these storms went on, gathering so much momentum and energy with each moment. It wasn't until two of the most powerful storms collided with each other, unthinkable amounts of power and energy clashing with each other! This epic duel of nature gave birth to the Triumvirate. At once, the three creators were all born with their own natural abilities and strengths. They were all knowing, all seeing. Yet at the time, there was very little to know or see.

The first sibling, brother Puritus, said to his siblings after long thought that they should create a home for themselves. The second sibling, brother Magi, was very astute in the ways of bending their realm to his will. He obliged his brother and created their immortal realm, outside of what we perceive as reality. The third sibling, sister Archadea, suggested they create something in the world they were born in. Puritus and Magi agreed, so they returned to their birth realm.

When they returned, they noticed that these arcane storms had been greatly diminished. The second sibling, Magi, was responsible for this. His channeling of energy to create his sibling's otherrealm drew from the great arcane storms, and created stars, the physical representation of their immortal realm. So they left our realm a peaceful, blackened void. But it would not remain that way for long. The three thought long and hard how to create a world, and what to do with it. Magi again suggested a spherical world, and the other two had no quarrels with the idea. So he created it. It was a dark, craggy, canyon filled, mountainous rock. Puritus found this a little disturbing, and he created the Sun, which he claimed would bring light to this land. Archadea, taking to her brother's idea of the sun, created the moon, to reflect light to the dark side of the world.

Magi, like a great sculptor, smoothed out the rough edges in our world, so to speak. He was indeed the most creative out of his brother and sister, who only managed to make a ball of light and a shiny rock. He created things such as water, lava, the wind, grass, etc. Amusingly, his siblings thought he might be a little mad, coming up with all these things. "Water? Lava? Well, whatever you think would make a good world, Magi." They would say to him. And he would go back to working on his creation, while Puritus and Archadea thought what to make of this world. Archadea thought, why not create lesser beings of themselves, and let them help us sculpt the world? Surely Magi was getting tired of doing everything. So they, with Magi's help, created the elemental sub-immortals to assist him. They were, Goddess of Fire, Infernia, God of Stone and Rock, Sierrus, God of Water, Aqueas, Goddess of Nature and the Forests, Arbora, and God of Ice and the Cold, Tundrak.

However, they could not have their own immortal realms, they would live on this world for eternity.

These lessers helped their three creators to shape our world into something so beautiful, so great, nothing like the immortals had ever seen. Great forests, lakes, oceans, deserts, mountains, plains. It took their breathe away. And so, the world they had created was set before them. And yet, the Triumvirate still felt it was a little empty. Archadea and Puritus overhead their brother Magi whispering with the Goddess of Natura, Arbora. When they confronted them about it, Magi told his siblings of Arbora's great ideas. Puritus and Archadea, although wary of their brother's "great ideas", listened. He explained the phenomena of 'living', with the trees and grass and other such plants. Without even finishing his idea, he released all the animals we know today into the world. It was quite a comical scene, as Puritus and Archadea panicked at their brother's release of these little.. things. They went around trying to clean them up, worried they would taint the perfect world. But then it hit them, after they took a moment to look at these little things.

These, creatures as Magi put it, were perfect to their world. They filled up that emptiness they had spoken of. So they thanked their brother and apologized for the overreaction, and again marveled at how these little animals worked. Archadea marveled at creatures such as the tiger or the shark, that fed off others to survive. It was something that intrigued her, the balance of things, as well as death. While Puritus admired animals such as the ape, the swan, the lion. Animals that were very gregarious and kept in a well knit unit. Magi, however, just really enjoyed creating the creatures.

And still, they did not feel that the realm was complete. Magi suggested naming it, which he did. He came to call it "Mortalis", or realm of the mortal. He then, out of a spur of creativity again, named their immortal realm, "Ethereius". Again, his two siblings expressed that their work was not done, not with simple naming. That's when the final piece of the puzzle struck them. These animals their creative brother made could be made like the elementals! Puritus, with Magi's help, was the first to create these mortal sentient beings, he called them Humans. They were very gregarious, lived in pack units, and had strong family ties. Magi created his own two races, the Dwarves and the Elves, both mysterious human-like creatures with odd cultures and ideals. Archadea created her own race as well, Dragons. The elite, masters of nature, they were few but powerful. Puritus didn't take to her creation, saying she should create another race of "real mortals" as he put it. Rather annoyed, Archadea created Orcs, a sub-human race of warlike beings. Puritus was outraged, calling her creations a crime against nature.

As Puritus and Archadea grew apart, Magi worked on Mortalis. For centuries he watched the little mortals grow and prosper. Each race seemed to have its own personality, the humans were quite cunning and competitive despite their attempted gregarious upbringing by Puritus, the elves wrapped themselves around in their tradition and strict rules of life, deep in the Dwarves went on to create great things and discover the magic of.. brewing! The orcs seemed to have more a family unit than the humans, while they were quite aggressive and warlike as Archadea made them, they stuck together to survive in the harsh jungles they originated from. Finally, the Dragons just watched their realm. They could also see Magi, the five elementals, the two siblings bickering. Yet they didn't seem to care, they just watched. Intriguing, Magi thought. Very intriguing.

Archadea, again looking down on Mortalis, decided that it was too.. perfect. The mortals could cheat death so easy, they could survive great injuries and live on. Death was a joke to them! All of them! Not just Puritus or Magi's creations, but her own!   Perfection wasn't Perfect, she reasoned. Perfection was balance. So in secret, she created The God of Death, Nexis. Nexis was the first sub-god that was not an elemental, and he was not tied directly to Archadea. He was independent, a neutral element. He added a severe set of rules to the world that suddenly took place. Death was real, there was finally an end to a beginning. When Puritus realized his humans were dying, he was outraged. He tried to eliminate death from reality, but Archadea defended her creation. Puritus threatened Archadea that he would undo her if she didn't step aside.

This threat sparked great rage in her, and she struck at her arrogant brother. Her brother was a little surprised at the power she wielded. She declared how arrogant he was, to only see one side. There was no balance to mortals who lived forever, and it was an outrageous thought. She reasoned with him that she created an other-realm for the departed souls to live in for eternity, which was the bargaining point that kept Puritus from trying to destroy Death. Again, Archadea turned away from Ethereius to watch Mortalis develop. Magi had been very busy, giving mortals the ability to influence what he called Magic! A little egocentric, Archadea thought, but she liked it. The clever, expansionist humans and the brutish Orcs had trouble influencing magic, while the secretive Elves and the ancient Dragons were much more in tune with it. She also noticed that there was a natural balance of good and evil in individuals and races themselves. There was no race innocent and pure, and none purely evil, that there were conniving, greedy humans who stole from their tribes, and misunderstood orcs who gave up everything to save those they loved. She admired neither, though, just the balance, the order.

Suddenly, while Archadea was molding a new race, the lizardmen, Puritus came to Mortalis with great power and fury. He had stolen Magi's ability to manipulate the arcane storm's powers, and he struck Archadea fatally. She retreated to Mortalis, hiding from Puritus' sight. She lived amongst her creations, the Dragons, who silently understood her and hid her. She saw from the great mountains the dragons hid in that her brother was trying to rid Death from the land, but he was far too elusive for Puritus to kill. He saw her brother watch exclusively over humans. Despicable, she thought. She brooded, and thought less about order, and more about ridding her brother from the over realm. She no longer favored order, but evil. Evil, she reasoned, was always the thing her brother sought to destroy. So, if she became it incarnate, there would always be order. Though she knew, this was less about order, and more about destroying her brother. This is when Archadea became the Goddess of Darkness, Kaotika. She, unlike Puritus, didn't have to steal from Magi, she already learned how to manipulate the great power Magi had. And so once she was fully recuperated, she came to her brother in Eterneius. They fought a mighty battle, Magi watched in horror at what the two had become. His dearest sister, Archadea, pushed too far by his loving brother, Puritus, blinded by his own ideals of morality and perfection. He fled the realm of Eterneius, vowing to never again return.

The two fought for ages, but it soon became clear that neither would win. Kaotika fled, and prepared her own realm of darkness to mirror Eterneius. Puritus returned to watch over Mortalis, a grave guilt coming over him. He had done this. He was now alone. He had killed his sister, who was only trying to undo his childish concepts of eternal happiness, immortality for the living, his bias of humans.. Now all that remained of her was a constant reminder of his mistakes. And his brother, Magi, became more mysterious and hidden than the races he had created. He would regularly see his brother's influence with the new races he created, the new magics he invented and imbued to the mortals, but he would never see him. Puritus began his eternal sentence of silence and loneliness. He became the God of Justice, in honor of his old sister, and watched the planet grow. From that point on, his influence over the planet was limited and subtle.

And so, the Era of Gods ended, setting the stage for the mortals to take hold of their realm.

The Age of Mortals.

In the time of Mortals, the first recorded year was marked five centuries ahead of The Great Divide. In the first year, the age of Bronze and Fire, the great, ancient human empires of yore were at their height. The elves mastered the arts and learned to achieve zen and enlightenment through nature. The Dwarves sought to develop technology and relied more on innovation than magics. The orcs were split and engaged in tribal warfare, several clans vying for control in the hospitable areas of the ever-dangerous Va'ak jungles. The lizardmen, neighbors of the Orcs, created their own bloody Gods, and worshiped and gave sacrifice to them. And the Dragons.. well, the Dragons watched. Several other races began to take hold of their surroundings in the first year.

Several hundred years pass, the races are all now fully aware of each other, and some minor wars go on over misunderstandings and language barriers. This is known as the Period of Greetings. Once of the Period of Greetings ended, the wars did as well, but many racial tensions did not. The humans, assured by their Gods and their leaders that they were the best, would always carry a natural hatred for those they viewed as lesser beings. What was most intriguing about humans was they could not hit an apple off a tree from 200 meters away with a bow and arrow, like an Elf. They could not create giant underground cities and super-advanced mechanical machines, like the Dwarves. They could not punch through iron and bronze, like the Orc. Neither could they move as quickly or as gracefully as the Lizardmen. But what did humanity hold over it's counterparts? Two, simple, simple things. An inborn need to expand, and the capability to breed easily.

Massive human cities rose everywhere in the middle lands, trade began to prosper and grow. While the many nation-states bickered and fought, Religion came first. The Holy Puritian Court, with its 11 High Priests, were the final word in political disputes. While they originally held the core values of Puritus, which was balance against Kaotika's evil, and justice, the last few honorable High Priests were replaced with a long line of despicable, manipulating High Priests. They were put into place by leaders who wanted to use the influence of the Holy Court to gain an upper hand in political dealings.

This was the tipping point in human/non-human tensions. The Holy Court called out many crusades, at first they were against non-believers of their own race. They allowed the countries who participated in the crusade to freely take land from the extradited nations they waged war with. The Elves, fearing what was about to come, cut all political ties and hid. The Dwarves scowled harder than usual and built up mighty defenses. The Orcs and the Lizardmen, however, did not know what was about to happen.

It was the year 504, the Era of Iron and Blood. The crusades and spilling blood for the Holy was stopped by the Great Unifying Wars. Ilonia, the greatest human nation of its time, took advantage of its neighbors having most of their greatest fighters in other lands, and attacked from all sides. The landlocked trader country unleashed its hidden army, marching up to several different capitals within weeks. Ilonia soon became the Empire of Ilonia, taking over much of the Middling Lands within a couple of years. They kept the new countries in line with their strict feudal laws and taxation policies.

The Empire of Ilonia became the Holy Ilonian Empire of Man, boasting that it had over 85% of the humans in Mortalis in its borders. The leaders of Mortalis, still hungry for more and knowing that the fledgling, peaceful little human nations they disgusted would be stamped out easily in the coming years. So they sought for some bigger prey. In the year 556, the Holy Court authorized The Great Purging. It was a crusade meant to show the lessers that inhabited the Va'ak jungles who the master beings were. And so, the legions of Holy Ilonia were sent to the south, to combat the great Orcs, Lizardmen, and goblins.

Ironically, and almost comically, the races were experiencing a golden age. The three Lizard kingdoms were united with peace and trade, the Great Orc Horde was once again united by Lord of Blades Khekhil Um'Haka, and had accepted Goblins into their horde. The horde was preparing to ransack the Lizardmen kingdoms when the human armies marched into the Va'ak. Thus started a horrible, bloody war. The supreme strength of the orcs, their numbers, and their knowledge of their lands trumped any technological advancement the humans had, as well as the thousands of troops sent to fight. The Lizardmen fought as well, on a minor scale, however.

By the year 561, the legions were forced into a full retreat, with the Horde trailing behind them. The horde reaches the southern regions of Ilonia, ransacking and raiding all in sight. After another year of war, the Orcs were pushed back into the Va'ak jungle, taking little casualties after their daring assault. This event rocked the foundations of human society. The Emperor was assassinated within the month, 15 more would be replaced within the year. Ilonia legions disbanded, feudal lords went missing as the plebs and peasants rioted. Nations rose and retook what they had once owned, and new nations formed from the ashes of Ilonia. With humanity broken and disbanded, the non-human races expanded. They took to the middle lands, establishing some of their own cities to the horror of the humans. Little did they know that these cities in the human middling lands would be the basis of acceptance and trade among their species.

Several centuries pass, and you would think that the humans would change after Great Ilonia. But no, they did not learn. More wars, strife, racial tensions rose from these new nations, some even trying to redo what Ilonia foolishly attempted. But, from Ilonia's ashes rise several righteous and true nations, several neutral little trading states, and industrious city-nations. Humanity was no longer a massed, racist, anti-human threat.

The year is 1160, the Age of Steel and Mithril. Will you lead the humans to their former glory, or split from the Orc Horde to create your own rabble? Whether you call upon the horrors of Kaotika or the blessings of Puritus, your people's destiny is in your hands. Mortalis, realm of the mortals, is yours to conquer.
